Embassy of Denmark meets with Raja Devasish Roy

On 1st November the Embassy of Denmark invited Raja Devasish Roy, the Chakma Chief and Member of UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, for a presentation and discussion of the situation in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) in Bangladesh. The CHT is an area in the south-eastern part of Bangladesh bordering India and Myanmar, which is inhabited by 11 different indigenous communities and Bengalis.

The CHT is faced with a number of complex and interrelated political and development challenges. A peace accord for the CHT was signed in 1997, but the implementation has been slow and far from satisfactory.

In his presentation, Raja Devasish Roy gave an overview of the political and socio-economic situation of the area and of the prospects of managing the complex challenges in the future. Among others he emphasized on completion of de-militarization and dismantling of non-permanent camps; rehabilitation of some refugees and all internally displaced people, devolution to CHT Regional Council, Hill District Councils and support to traditional institutions and on resolution of land disputes. Land disputes continues to be one of the main problems in the CHT.

As part of the bilateral development assistance, Denmark provides support to agriculture, water supply and sanitation and to legal and rights-based development initiatives in the CHT. CHT and issues related to indigenous people are among the key priorities in the Danish development assistance to Bangladesh.
